No deadline. Why no deadline? Well the track 'Working On Your Own' wasn't written last week nor is it, in the strictest of senses, a 'positive song'.
It was however, written shortly before Lockdown started about the loneliness of living a topsy-turvy self-employed lifestyle. Sleeping when others are working and working when others are sleeping. Little did I know that the rest of the world would know how I felt very shortly. To me, it bookends the album and feels like the Strawberry Fields Forever to the album's Sgt Pepper so I thought I'd make this the last track we worked on for it.
Alongside my unusual cast of collaborators (special mentions for them all for their work on this album - Daz Woodcock, Thirds, Andy Lyth, Maya McCourt - truly outstanding) there is also a very special guest in the of Mr Richard Jupp (drummer, songwriter and co-founder of of Elbow) who is supplying a gorgeous groove for this song.
I had intended to release this song last week hot on the heels of the rest of the album (as a victory lap but also cos I like showing off) but a lightning strike outside my house destroyed my internet and meant I couldn't get my hands on the wonderful parts these fantastic guest musicians had sent me. So it goes. I think the track is better for the week off I took.
lyrics
Molly please spare a smile for me
It's so dark here in your company
Drifting like a ghost through the badlands that we call home
It chips away at your soul
When you’re working on your own
On the edge
On the edges of civilisation
Saturday night is the loneliest night of the week
Shift workers of the world unite
Bathe yourself in Piccadilly's multicolored lights
When the human touch that means so much
Is a phantom limb on social crutches
Keep a little kind in your heart
When you’re working on your own
On the edge
On the edges of civilisation
Saturday night is the loneliest night of the week
What else could you do with my nighttimes?
(Could you do with a timeline?)
What else would you do in the sunshine?
(Would you do with lifetime?)
When you’re working on your own
On the edge
On the edges of civilisation...
Saturday night is the loneliest night of the week
